 About Sutton-Style Exam:

A Sutton-style grammar exam is the type of entrance test used by the grammar schools in Sutton, South London. The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is the first stage test common to

  • Sutton Grammar School
  • Greenshaw High School (Selective band)
  • Wilson’s School
  • Wallington County Grammar School
  • Nonsuch High School for Girls
  • Wallington High School for Girls

These schools use a shared, two-stage 11-plus exam system designed to select academically able pupils for entry at age 11 (Year 7).

  Key Subjects Assessed

 English: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing clarity

  Maths: reasoning, logic, multi-step problem solving

  Thinking skills: pattern recognition, inference, explanation

Exam Format

It’s divided into two stages:

Stage 1 – Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Two papers: English and Maths
  • Each paper ≈ 45 minutes
  • Computer-marked
  • Tests speed, accuracy, and reasoning skills
  • High scorers move on to Stage 2

Stage 2 – Second Stage Entrance Exam

  • Written (not multiple-choice)
  • Two papers: English Writing and Maths Problem Solving
  • Each ≈ 45–60 minutes
  • Tests depth of understanding and ability to explain reasoning

Please note that, due to over-subscription, meeting the required standard at the entrance tests does not guarantee the offer of a place at the school.
